Patient Instructions - 3. Day of Surgery
Medication Instructions
On the day of surgery, YOU SHOULD TAKE any heart pills, blood pressure pills (except water pills) and seizure medication. If you take insulin, take half of your normal dose in the morning.
DO NOT TAKE:
- Other diabetes pills.
- Aspirin (or aspirin products) for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery.
- Ibuprofen (Motrin, Aleve, Advil, or other anti-inflammatory medication) for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery.
- Warfarin, coumadin, Plavix for 10 days prior to your surgery. You need to discuss stopping these medications with your prescribing doctor.
- Certain herbal remedies including Ginseng, St. John's Wort for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery.
- Vitamin E (including multivitamins) and garlic supplements as they increase your risk of bleeding during surgery.
BRING ALL YOUR MEDICATIONS IN THEIR LABELED CONTAINERS TO THE HOSPITAL ON YOUR DAY OF SURGERY
