Patient Instructions - 2. Day Before Surgery
The Day Before Surgery Please Do the Following:
Bowel Preparation
- Drink one bottle of Magnesium Citrate in the morning the day before surgery.
- Administer one Fleet enema in the evening (between 5 and 7 p.m.) before surgery.
Lunch the Day Before Surgery
- Follow a light-soft diet for lunch the day before surgery.
- Limited milk or dairy products
- FOOD: one light sandwich (turkey, ham, chicken), oatmeal, rice, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, bananas, peaches, pears
- SOUP: broth, bouillon, chicken noodle
- JUICES: apple, cranberry, cranapple, grape, strained orange juice
- OTHER BEVERAGES: coffee, tea, powdered lemonade
- DESSERTS: gelatins, flavored ices, popsicles
- OTHER: salt, sugar, hard candy
Other Diet Instructions the Day Before Surgery
- ONLY Clear liquids for dinner.
- Drink plenty of fluids and avoid dairy products today.
- DO NOT eat or drink ANYTHING after midnight the night before your surgery (INCLUDING water, juice, coffee, chewing gum, candy, tea). You are allowed to have a few sips of water ONLY to take your medication in the morning.
- DO NOT drink any alcoholic beverages 48 hours before or after surgery.
Other Preparation:
- Leave jewelry and other valuables at home.
- If you wear contact lenses, glasses, or dentures, you must bring your case to store them during surgery.
