About Our Center for Holistic Urology

Columbia's Center for Holistic Urology (CHU) offers the best of conventional and alternative medicine to men and women with urinary tract disorders including prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers, chronic urinary tract infections, benign prostatic enlargement, prostatitis, incontinence, interstitial cystitis, and kidney stones.

At CHU, our mission is to increase the health and wellbeing of people with urologic diseases. We evaluate and identify the fundamental underlying causes of urological problems, whether they are physical, mental, or emotional. We treat these root causes and relieve uncomfortable symptoms with complementary therapies such as acupuncture and acupressure, clinical nutrition, botanical and homeopathic medicine, exercise, diet therapy, stress management, and mind-body therapies. We also strive to promote wider knowledge and understanding of these therapies by conducting high quality basic-science research and clinical trials.

Dr. Aaron Katz: Holistic Urology Specialist

More than a decade ago, Columbia Urology's Dr. Aaron Katz recognized that integrative medicine could hold an important place in urology, and in 1998 he opened the Center for Holistic Urology at Columbia. Since its inception, Columbia urologists and those at other medical centers around the country have given CHU overwhelmingly positive support. Doctors know that CHU offers well-founded, legitimate complementary and alternative therapies. CHU's staff now includes a complementary medical urologist (Dr. Aaron Katz), an acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medicine specialist (Jillian Capodice), and a basic-science researcher (Jun Yan).

Research in Holistic Urology

Researchers at CHU are currently studying a variety of herbal and natural product extracts in the laboratory for their anti-prostate and anti-bladder cancer activities. They hope to identify agents that inhibit or kill urologic cancer cells in cell culture and animal models, to clarify their mechanisms of action using cutting edge experimental techniques, and to use data from promising pre-clinical studies as rationale to translate our efforts from the laboratory to the clinic. We believe our extensive efforts in these areas will enable us to design meaningful clinical trials for patients who may benefit most from the study agents.
