Residency Program - Academic Overview

About the Program

The urology residency at The Department of Urology is currently a six-year program starting with one year of general surgery internship, four years of clinical urology, and one research year. The clinical years consist of rotations at the main hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, and the following affiliated hospitals: NewYork-Presbyterian/Allen Pavilion, St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospitals, and the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian.

The rotation schedule is divided, in general, into four-month blocks. In total, each resident completes 12 months as a chief resident on an adult urology service and four months as a chief resident in pediatric urology.

Matching in the urology program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia includes a surgical internship in the Department of Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia. In addition to learning both basic surgical skills and patient care, each intern rotates on the general adult urology service at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia for one or two months, providing exposure to clinical urology. The ERAS application for urology suffices for both urology and surgery.
